HISTORY OF MOTHER'S DAY

First news about Mother's Day came from ancient Greeks who celebrated a holiday in honor of Rhea, the mother of the gods. Ancient Romans celebrated a holiday in honor of Cybele, the mother goddess, at the end of March. In the British Isles and Celtic Europe, the goddess Brigid, and later her successor St. Brigid, were honored with a spring Mother's Day.

Early Christians celebrated the festival on the fourth Sunday of Lent in honor of the Virgin Mary, the mother of Christ.

Mother's Day festivities in the United States date back to 1872, when Julia Ward Howe organized a meeting for mothers in Boston. These meetings continued every year. In 1907 Ana Jarvis, a school teacher, started a campaign to establish a National Mother's Day. And in 1911, Mother's Day was celebrated in almost all States. President Woodrow Wilson made this celebration official in 1914.

Nowadays, most of the people around the world celebrate Mother's Day mainly during the month of May. In Colombia, it is celebrated on the second Sunday of May.
